Challenging Patriarchy in Education Systems

Education systems are characterized by patriarchal norms, practices and policies that prevent girls, boys and nonconforming genders from achieving their full potential. Education policy and curriculum have emerged as a key terrain for patriarchal backlash in recent years. In the face of the resurgence of patriarchal values, affirming and living by feminist principles and practices in education systems takes on new and urgent significance.

The ultimate long term goal of Feminist School is to challenge, disrupt, and dismantle patriarchy within education systems globally.

“The lessons learnt at Feminist School will improve our program development, improve our partnership and also help us evaluate program outcomes.”

- Feminist School Participant

Drawing on feminist pedagogical approaches, Feminist School curriculum is an evolving set of themes and resources provided as offerings in the learning space to challenge, and equip participants with the knowledge, skills, ideas, resources and confidence to apply feminist practices and tools in their own contexts. Feminist School takes place virtually for 2 hours over a span of 6 weeks. It is led by an intergenerational group of expert feminist facilitators.

Each edition of Feminist School is curated and adapted for each specific group.

“Feminist school allows you to develop the ability to think critically: think critically about your activism through a feminist lens; think critically about the education system you seek to transform and think critically about feminist ways of being and doing and how those can become embodied in our ways of being and doing as feminist activists in the education landscape.”
