The Gender at the Centre Initiative (GCI) is a global alliance of civil society and international organizations working in eight pilot countries across sub-Saharan Africa to mobilize the necessary political leadership and expertise at country level to rapidly step up progress for gender equality in and through education. Rooted in gender-responsive education sector planning (GRESP), the GCI approach works through existing country-level processes to embed gender across the education system. A pathway to gender equality in education
The Gender-Responsive Education Sector Planning (GRESP) policy brief provides an overview of a whole-system approach for putting gender equality at the heart of education through sector planning. The policy note outlines the key elements of GRESP and points to opportunities for further engagement through national and regional workshops led by UNGEI, the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and other partners.
Guidance for Developing Gender-Responsive Education Sector Plans
The Guidance for Developing Gender-Responsive Education Sector Plans developed by GPE and UNGEI, with support from UNICEF, is a tool to support countries to put in place gender-sensitive policies, plans and learning environments, with a view to transform the way education systems function. Applying a gender lens to education analysis ensures that policies and strategies can better target specific groups of girls or boys and the challenges they face.
Gender at the Centre Initiative Briefing Note
Launched during the G7 Education-Development Ministerial Meeting in 2019, the Gender at the Centre Initiative (GCI) offers support to developing countries committed to advancing gender equality in their education systems. Eight pilot countries have been identified: Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger (G5 Sahel countries), Mozambique, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
