Achieving gender parity in primary and secondary education by 2005 was one of four targets under the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) to promote gender equality and empower women.
However, more than 70 countries are failing to reach this target. This has grave consequences. If the target had been reached more than 1 million childhood deaths could have been averted
Urgent action is required. If the global community lets 2005 pass without a major
new initiative in education, it is unlikely that the corresponding target of universal primary education goal by 2015 will be achieved and all the MDGs will be discredited.
This report draws on our decades of experience to identify which strategies work particularly well for educating girls and sets out recommendations for what should be done to get the MDG targets for education back on track.
